I tried to use the Zen Nano we have here at the library to download an audiobook and I was not able to do it!

    I tried here at the library;
I got the book on my computer (have since deleted it)
but could NOT get it on the NANO

I really wanted to be able to explain it to patrons who ask.

I will be looking into the other stuff
and I am already planning to start a blog
    and take the class.

    Completed Task number 1.

I have signed up for Flickr.
I uploaded pictures, tagged and described them.
I joined the Southern Adirondack Library System Group
I added a comment to a Flickr photo from another contact.

Jennifer, did you sign up for Facebook yet? I found a couple of Jennifer Ferriss’s, are you the one with the cartoon avatar? Friend me if you’re there! :-) I’m the only Polly Farrington there that looks over 25.

I started a blog back in September-October 2006 (when I was at a SALS workshop) and it was on the SALS server for a while. A few months ago, it was moved to our own server at SSPL. The blog’s called CTLC and I gave it a major makeover (in appearance if not so much in content) since its SALS days. I want to say, “Feel free to take a look at it”, but it’s on our staff intranet and requires a username and password. So folks, please contact me directly for access info if you’re curious. SSPL’s phone: 584-7860. My extension: 241. I’d rather not have my email address here, considering the spam we get.

I have at least 70 posts on CTLC, and I enjoy blogging.

On CTLC I also have a link to del.ici.ous, a bookmarking tool that I have been using for the last couple of years or so. You can view the sites I’ve bookmarked, and you may find some useful.

On CTLC again I have a link to my RSS feeds. I use Google Reader as my RSS tool. I had the SALS blog as well as PLA’s blog on my Google Reader. But then again, the SALS blog ‘Feedblitzes’ me via my email, so I deleted the SALS feed.

I have had a Flckr account for a while. Then I took Polly’s Flckr workshop and learned some more. I should upload more pix to my account though.

I read a lot about Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 and until recently, was quite psyched about Library 2.0. Well, not everyone is, however, and I began getting distinct vibes that told me it’s time to CHILL OUT :)

But I guess I’m incurable. So, here I go again… down that slippery slope.

I am the cartoon Jennifer Ferriss — although the other Jennifer Ferriss is related.

Still having problems with your Nano? Come to a Do-it-yourself (DIY) day and learn how to make it work. The next day is September 12th.

Here is the blog post for the SALS’ Netlibrary service.
    http://testblogb.sals.edu/index.php/2007/03/07/netlibrary-eaudiobooks/

You can also search this blog for Netlibrary to find the post.

Our site has a direct del.icio.us link to our library account. We use it as a way to create a sort of local “database” of links if you will.

We have a MySpace page for our YAs, but not many go there. It seems the trend has hit a plateau with our town – which is just fine with me.

As for the other challenges, I have a personal blog, which I have neglected recently. I used it as a means to get over the “culture of perfect”, and it worked quite well.

While you are experimenting, feel free to check out our site (no where near perfect but certainly trying things out…) You can even IM us from the home page through Meebo. Someone already tried it (can’t remember who – sorry) but we actually do get quite a few true IMs for guidance through the web sludge.

    Have fun! Sara

  • 8 Shobhan // Aug 27, 2007 at 6:23 pm

I signed up on Meebo for an account and added Jennifer to my buddy list.
She’s away on vacation currently and I bet she has NO interest in talking to any one from work right now :)

I also created a wiki on pbwiki.com. My site’s URL is http://sssp/pbwiki.com and is curently fully accesible and public.
Don’t exactly know how things will shape up, but right now at least I’m playing with the idea of using it for some committee work.

  • 9 Shobhan // Aug 27, 2007 at 6:31 pm

    Correction:

My pbwiki site’s address is http://sspl.pbwiki.com

  • 10 Julie Martin // Sep 10, 2007 at 8:47 pm

    Hey Jennifer
I signed up for a Flickr account!
I have uploaded a handful of pictures and joined the SALS group.
I even found a contact who took photos of the Turning Point parade in Schuylerville. We are now messaging back and forth about the various bands that did/did not perform for this year’s parade. It’s really neat!

  • 11 Ardyce // Sep 12, 2007 at 7:35 pm

I uploaded photos to our flickr account, looked around some, joined the Sals group, finally figured out the avatar thing. I will continue to work on the other Library 2.0 things. Sometimes feel like that computer mouse is part of my hand.

  • 12 Julie Martin // Sep 18, 2007 at 10:56 am

I have downloaded 2 different books onto my Zen Nano MP3 player. One was just a trial one, the other was a book I actually read, Kite Runner. I also showed some of our staff how to make it work. The first time through with NetLibrary was a bit awkward, but with a little diligence, it was worth it in the end.

We have one patron who is losing his sight and loves to read. He now visits the NetLibrary site and downloads books to his home computer where he can listen to them from the safety of his home.

Stick with it! This process gets much easier when once you’ve done it a few times.

  • 13 Julie Martin // Sep 19, 2007 at 2:38 pm

I have read a few articles on library 2.0 and made comments. This is one area where I feel behind the 8-ball because it is so new to me. Then I list all the ways our library is already making advances in policy and technology and I realize that we really are participating in L2. For the small libraries, it can be as simple as experimenting with programming that links community organizations, or inviting people to make themselves more at home in our building than we have every dared before (our stained carpets will attest to the popularity of this notion).

Honestly, if it were not for this challenge (thanks Jennifer!), I would probably put this L2 philosophy on a back burner and not allow myself to make time for it. Now I’m glad I took the challenge to address the issue further.

The articles that I read were:
11 reasons why Library 2.0 exists and matters
Where do we begin? A Library 2.0 conversation with Michael Casey

  • 14 Guinevere Forshey // Sep 20, 2007 at 3:47 pm

I opened a work account on del.icio.us. Now I can access all of my bookmarks no matter what computer I’m working on- very convenient!

My consumer health info blog is officially up & running at cplhealth.wordpress.com. Can’t wait for the blog workshop next month.

I’m not a big fan of these downloadable audiobooks. It comes as one big file which I dislike. If I switch to something else on my mp3 player, I have to remember the exact time location that I stopped listening. If the file was broken up into smaller pieces or “chapters” it would be easier to find my place again instead of always having to fast-forward to where I left off.

I do think windows media player easy to use (download/sync) and I’ve been able to help some patrons with it. I think it needs to be made clearer to patrons that this is not compatible with iPod- that’s probably the #1 complaint.

  • 15 Michelle // Oct 5, 2007 at 9:55 am

I have completed task 3 and have joined myspace. I started to get my page setup the way I wanted it, and have been having fun with it. Now this may sound stupid, but I was surprised when I logged back into myspace that I have a friend and his name was Tom. I was like who is Tom and why does he want to be my friend? lol Well come to find out Tom is friends with everybody. I still have yet to post a picture, not really sure what I am going to use. So if anybody would like to friend me in myspace my name is Caden’s Mom.

  • 16 pollyalida // Oct 8, 2007 at 1:56 pm

Michelle, that’s so funny. I had the same reaction on myspace – “who’s Tom”! But I’ve never deleted Tom. I understand that if you delete him, you’ll never get him back. And for those of us without many myspace friends, that would be sad. :-)

  • 17 Natalie // Oct 11, 2007 at 10:52 am

I’ve set up a RSS feeder, Bloglines and have subscribed to the SALS blog from there. I have quite a few libraries/library related blogs included. It’s a handy way to keep up with library news without having to check each site individually. For “fun”, I’ve added the Unshelved blog so that includes the daily cartoon as well as updates from Bill and Gene. The Library blogs that I’ve added are :
    Library Stuff (45) (17)
Librarians’ Internet Index: New This Week (36) (4)
    h20boro lib blog (0) (2)
Library Link of the Day (1) (0)
    The Shifted Librarian (1) (1)
Ann Arbor District Library – Books (7) (1)
Southern Adirondack Library System (0) (7)
    blogwithoutalibrary.net (0) (0)
    librarian.net (0) (1)
    RUSA Blog (0) (0)
    Library Journal News (0) (1)

  • 18 Melinda Taormina // Oct 13, 2007 at 2:54 pm

    Jennifer,

At first, I set up an RSS feeder in Yahoo, but found it clunky. Natalie McDonough showed me Bloglines and I subscribed today. I have added additional feeds, based upon my interests. I attended the DIY bloggong session with Jennifer (good fun) and the Flickr workshop with Polly (learned a lot but still need to practice). I attended a workshop on NetLibrary downloadable audiobooks. Then, I downloaded a NetLibrary audiobook to my computer, and then transferred to the Library’s Zen Nano.

  • 19 Becky // Oct 15, 2007 at 8:29 pm

I finally made it to a DIY day at SALS. Polly helped me get set up on Flickr. I uploaded some photos, learned my way around the site, joined the SALS group, and added a comment to a photo of Polly’s.
When I got back to work this evening I uploaded more photos, organized what I had and put a Flickr badge on my website. Lots of fun!

  • 20 Becky // Oct 15, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Jennifer helped me set up a meebo account today. Anyone want to be my buddy? I’m corflib – or is that r.fasulo?

  • 21 jennifer // Oct 16, 2007 at 8:19 am

I think you are both corflib and r.fasulo!

  • 22 Becky // Oct 16, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Ok, so now I signed up for aim also. In aim I am bookyreader in case anyone wants to be my buddy. This is great. Now I can talk to my kids on line. I’m feeling more connected all the time.

    Library Challenge Number 4
I set up a Blog for a club we have at Saratoga Library, SALE
    (Saratoga Association of Library Employees)

    I have invited people to comment;
I have posted and uploaded lots of information.

I attended a blogging workshop on Oct 10.

I added some pictures to my blog.

  • 24 Melinda Taormina // Feb 25, 2008 at 2:11 pm

I signed up for Library Elf. I enjoy getting “gentle” reminders of overdues and holds. It helps me manage my account more efficiently. I would like to recomend to patrons, but have some concerns about protecting their privacy. Is a permanent reading list maintained in a massive database somewhere? Exactly how does the service work? Insights, please?!

  • 25 jennifer // Feb 26, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Library Elf has a privacy policy –http://www.libraryelf.com/Privacy.aspx

    Here is an excerpt:
“You should be aware that some libraries keep personal information (such as name, address, phone number etc.) in your library account. Although this information may be accessible, Elf does NOT access any of it.”

My library has turned on reminder notices in Polaris, thus Library Elf is not necessary to remind me to return my materials. This is a good service if you go to multiple libraries around the U.S. –or even locally using UHLS.

Maybe others know more — this is good topic to share at our next workshop!

  • 26 Guinevere // Feb 28, 2008 at 1:36 pm

I just signed up with Library Elf & I noticed something about the “Holds Not Ready Yet”. At Crandall, we *do not* tell patrons where they are in the holds queue. Library Elf very clearly tells you your place number in the status column. This might be another topic to discuss as I can see the potential for patron confusion.

  • 27 Guinevere // Feb 28, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I’ve been playing around with Meebo today. I was able to get the widget up on my site without any problems. I set up an account and (tried) to add Jennifer. I can’t tell if I’m on or offline. I will try adding more people to see if I’m doing this right.

  • 28 Denise Coblish // Mar 10, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I realize that we hadn’t posted our progress and that the clock is ticking!
    1. We signed up for Flickr last summer. http://www.flickr.com/photos/roundlakelibrary/
We linked these photos to our blog, tagged and described them, and then added Polly and Long Lake library as our friends, and commented on their photos.
    2. I forwarded the linked Library 2.0 along with a dozen other to library staff in weekly emails.
    3. My staff learned to use myspace for our Young Adult site. Our library board has created a wiki at pbwiki in order to stay in touch regarding the construction project.
    4. The library’s web site officially moved to a wordpress blog at the end of 2007 and staff has attended the blogging workshop.
    5. Staff attended the RSS workshop and learned to use iGoogle to harness RSS feeds.
    6. Staff have assisted patrons in setting up and editing personal myspace pages. I trained staff in maintaining the library blog.

Ok, Ok, I know I’m probably the last one to talk about the tasks that I have accomplished. So here it goes.

We set up 2 flickrs on our library blog. one is of our veteran collection and one is for programs that we have had. Joined SALS group in flickr. Added a couple of comments to several pictures.

I have read several of the article suggested by Michael Stephens. I just wish technology would slow down a little so that I can catch up.

we set up Meebo on the library blog and also use the flickrtoolbox.

I set up an igoogle blog and have several rss’ on it such as SALS, Stillwater Library, The New York Review of Books, WIRED, and Tame the Web and PLA

Finally, Michelle, Theresa and I keep teaching each other how to use different tools.

All in All this has been extremely invigorating and exhausting trying to keep up with all of this.

  • 30 Cindy Robertson // Mar 20, 2008 at 4:23 pm

I signed up for Flickr on Dec. 3, 2007 and joined the group and added a name to pictures that didn’t recognize my co-worker in her pictures with Harry Dutcher. I’ve read articles and set up a Twitter account (no one to tweet with yet) and made a wiki at pbwiki. I haven’t set up a blog though and I see I have to post once a week or more for at least one month and I’ve run out of time. If I can do that so that the postings go on After April 9th, I will be able to complete that task too. I am coming to DIY day on March 31 to get help for some of the last tasks I need to do.
